What To Do After a Car Accident

So you’ve been in a car accident. Here’s what Oregon drivers need to know after being involved in an auto accident. I wouldn’t wish for anyone to have a motor vehicle accident. But if so, there are a few important things you should know. First and foremost, stay calm and try not to add any more stress into this already stressful situation. No one plans on getting into a car accident and the majority of car accident victims experience shock after one occurs. This state of shock causes adrenaline to mask injuries, pains and pulled muscles. It may take a day or two, and sometimes longer, to feel the full damage that may have occurred. If you have been in a car accident, do not worry, our experienced massage and chiropractic doctors at Portland Deep Tissue Massage can help! IMMEDIATELY: Assuming you are physically able to do so, get photographs of the accident and the damage. Get some background to establish where it happened. Move the vehicles out of the way to somewhere safe, then take more pictures of the damage to the vehicles. Exchange information with the other driver. Get the drivers license number, insurance information REPORTING: The first thing you need to know is that you have to report an accident to the DMV within 72 hours if there is more than $1,500 in total damage. That includes you and your passengers, your car, and any other vehicle or property involved. Failure to do so is a crime! A police report does not satisfy this requirement. A link for the form is here: http://www.Oregon.gov MEDICAL COVERAGE: Oregon is a PIP state. That means that every insured driver or passenger is covered with at least $15,000 of PIP (Personal Injury Protection) and/or up to one year of treatment (ORS 742.524). PIP is the part of your insurance that covers your medical costs. I recommend that people cover themselves with more than $15K, because that is not a lot of money for a bad injury. It should not be hard to find a Chiropractor, Medical Doctor or car accident massage specialist who will take a PIP claim for your accident. Unless you have a deductible for it (which should be reimbursed) if the accident is not your fault, no money for medical treatment should have to come out of your pocket. Typically your insurance is billed by your physician, and then they get reimbursed by the insurance of the person at fault. If the treatment goes on for over a year, most physicians will be able to continue treating you if you sign a lien and get a lawyer. A lien is a legal document that is signed by both the client and the lawyer that states the physician will be paid. It is also important to know that in Oregon, minimum PIP benefits include limited coverage for loss of earnings, funeral expenses, essential services, and child care. VEHICLE DAMAGE: Often and insurance company will try to get you to go to a collision center (body shop) that they work with. Oregon law says that you can go to a collision center of your choice. If so, it would be a good idea to get more than one estimate. After repair, your car may not be worth as much...

Massage Therapy For Auto Accidents

Massage Therapy For Auto Accidents

Massage Therapy For Auto Accidents If you’ve been injured in an accident involving a motor vehicle, often the damage inside the body is less obvious than the damage on the surface. According to Mayo Clinic, 35% of new spinal injuries each year are caused by auto accidents. The nervous system– involving the brain, spine, and nerves — is often heavily affected after such injury. If you find yourself unsure of why you are in severe pain after an automobile accident, it’s time to consider massage therapy to relieve damage to the nervous system. Whiplash Alongside the most common form of injury caused by auto accidents (brain injury, which often requires immediate medical attention), neck and spinal injury –usually manifested by whiplash– is extremely common. The spine naturally attempts to compensate for whiplash through the formation of a natural S-shaped curve; unfortunately, studies have proven that this movement itself is also injurious. The damage caused to the neck and spine affects the entire body, and often needs to be repaired. While mild cases of whiplash can heal with ice treatment and rest, more severe cases do not go away: a more serious regimen for recovery is required, and in this, massage is crucial for patient recovery. The effects of untreated whiplash that does not improve within a few weeks are severe, including leading to anxiety and depression. Types of Therapeutic Massage A qualified massage therapist is familiar with the types of massage that can help alleviate the suffering of an auto accident. The most common forms of therapy are Myofascial Release Therapy, which helps to relax pressure on the muscles affected by an auto accident. Static Compression massage is used to increase the flow of oxygen to compressed muscles to ease them back and ultimately soften them sufficiently for further therapy. Deep Tissue Massage is designed to help realign the muscles and restore initial nerve function. Auto accidents, due to the speeds at which they occur, “freeze” the nerves into a defensive state, taking weeks to recover in best-case scenarios– and as the muscles are damaged from the accident themselves, repair means realignment of the muscles, the spine, and the nerves to their proper position. Most sessions are conducted over the course of an hour, and repairing the damaged muscles and realigning the nerves and muscles can take multiple sessions. The combination of multiple massage therapies helps optimize the body’s total recovery speed. The Healing Process Auto accidents are incredibly traumatic, and victims can suffer physical and psychological injuries. Therapeutic massage techniques can help victims of accidents recover more quickly than through addictive painkillers and other medication. Scientific massage helps leverage the natural healing powers of the body to heal itself and permanently alleviate the chronic pain of automobile accidents. Through a properly executed regimen of therapeutic massage therapy, accident victims can recover quickly and efficiently, and return to a more normal mode of...

The Benefits Of Maternity Massage

The Benefits Of Maternity Massage

For thousands of years, therapeutic massages have been used to improve health and wellness. During pregnancy, women often suffer from headaches, backaches, and muscle tension in a number of areas. Prenatal massage can provide several health benefits to women and the unborn child. It is best to find a massage therapist with adequate training and experience with prenatal massages. If labor pains, depression, and anxiety are some of the concerns you are facing with pregnancy, you will benefit from maternity massage. 1. Regulates Hormones One of the major reasons to consider massage during pregnancy is to have the hormones regulated. During massage, the hormone levels with relaxation and stress are altered. This will help to reduce high amounts of stress, and will allow women to feel better about their pregnancy. Women who have undergone studies found that prenatal massages for five weeks significantly reduced norepinephrine and cortisol levels. The hormone levels also reduced serious concerns with complications related to low birth weight and other newborn complications. 2. Reduces Swelling A major health problem during pregnancy is swelling. Edema is common as there is reduced circulation of the blood and increased pressure on the blood vessels. With the right massage treatment, the soft tissues will reduce the collection of fluids in various joints. Massages will help to remove tissue waste, and will enhance the body’s lymphatic system. The right massage treatment is vital to reduce swelling and pain. 3. Eases Nerve Pain Sciatic nerve pain is a horrible condition to face during pregnancy. It can feel like no matter how you shift your body or try to stretch, the pain never ends. Meeting with a massage therapist is a great way to help reduce the amount of stress and tension on the sciatic nerves. Since the uterus rests on the lower back and pelvic floor, it increases the amount of stress and pressure on your sciatic nerve. With massage therapy, the inflamed nerve will release the tension from the surrounding muscles. Regular massage is one of the best ways to manage the pain associated with sciatic nerves. 4. Improves Blood Flow The body needs proper blood flow to allow nutrients to pass through the womb to the fetus. It is important to have adequate blood flow to help remove toxins out of the body. The other reason for massage is to help increase oxygen to the fetus. Adequate blood flow helps the brain development and other areas of development to the growing fetus. Proper blood flow will reduce the amount of tension and stress in the body, which reduces the risk of heart disease and other serious conditions. 5. Helps Maintain Proper Posture When you are carrying a baby, it is easy to slouch and let your posture go awry. With massage therapy, you can easily maintain proper posture and prevent back aches and other issues. Maintaining the right flexibility and tone is the best way to prepare the body for delivery. Enhancing the body’s ability to handle the extra weight will reduce tension and stress on the legs, which decreases the risk of leg cramps. Massage therapy is one of the best ways to make your body comfortable during the nine month process of creating a child. Find an experienced massage therapist today to work on your body to...

Preparing for Your First Massage

Preparing for Your First Massage

Every masseuse is different, and finding one that is friendly and performs high quality Portland massage therapy can be more difficult than you think. There are many things you can do before scheduling a massage appointment to ensure that you have the relaxing, therapeutic experience that you expect and deserve. When searching for a qualified Portland massage therapist, ask around for references. Your friends or family members may have some solid suggestions, and it’s always reassuring to have a reference from someone you know well and trust. Another thing you can do is check out reviews online. If you have a masseuse in mind, see what people on the internet are saying about that person or business before you book your appointment. Don’t hesitate to contact the masseuse directly before your appointment. Ask them about their experience, what kind of massage techniques they offer, and any other questions you think are useful. When you go in for a massage, it is common courtesy to practice sound hygiene. Not being stinky and filthy makes the massage a better experience for both you and the therapist. Don’t wear too much cologne or perfume, either. Showing up on time or early for your appointment is also common courtesy. Rushing to make your appointment can turn it into a stressful ordeal, which kind of defeats the purpose of getting a massage in the first place. Portland Deep Tissue Massage is a highly qualified and well-respected massage clinic in Portland, Oregon. Dr. Jeff Dougal founded the clinic, and has more than 20 years of experience as a professional massage therapist and chiropractor. With his exceptional chiropractic adjustments and deep tissue massages, he has earned the trust of many loyal customers in the Portland...

Massage Therapy and Good Posture

Massage Therapy and Good Posture

These days it seems like more and more people are working at jobs that involve long periods of time sitting and staring at a computer. Sitting at a computer for hours can wreak havoc on your back, shoulder and neck muscles, especially if you aren’t practicing good posture, which most people don’t. Usually people will slouch or lean their necks forward when sitting at a computer desk, and this can lead to pain and health problems. It may not seem like it, but bad posture is one of the hardest habits to break. When you slouch forward for hours at a time, the muscles in your back, shoulders and neck are stretched and must work harder to support your spinal alignment. When you lean your neck forward or slouch, your neck and back muscles are forced to work against gravity to hold your head upright. Your muscles will become tight and stiff, which can be quite painful. Over time, if the bad posture isn’t corrected, your muscles can contract so much that they may begin to pull bones out of place and pinch nerves and blood vessels. Luckily, massage therapy can help correct your posture. Massage therapy can relax and loosen your tight muscles, which makes it much easier for you to practice good posture. It will feel more comfortable and less painful when you sit upright, and eventually good posture will become second nature to you. If you are in search of a Portland massage therapist who can soothe your stiff and aching muscles, Dr. Jeff Dougal has many years of experience working with patients who suffer the consequences of bad posture. He is a Portland chiropractor as well as a masseuse, and he uses a combination of the two therapies to provide pain relief and lasting comfort for his...

Although one drawback to any sport, no matter how physical it is, is the potential for injuries. The potential for injury is higher in athletes as they’re using their bodies in more strenuous ways on a regular basis. Injuries can range in severity. Sometimes you are still able to participate with only minor discomfort, while other times may require medical attention and don’t allow you to play at all. No matter what type of injury you have incurred, seeking injury massage therapy can help in your recovery and get you back into the game quicker. Living with chronic back pain, neck pain or headaches can be debilitating to your everyday life. You may be unable to move around as freely as you should and you may need to frequently rest. One of the worse things is that people can’t truly see how much pain you are going through. Your quality of sleep can often be hindered by this pain. One way to help rid your body of this pain, that you may not have considered, is visiting a chiropractor. Chiropractors are able to re-align your back, which can fix a lot of issues that may be contributing to your pain. The first visit is likely to be mostly an evaluation. The chiropractor will want a history of your injury, to take some x-rays and will even want to do a physical examination. From all this they will better know what your problems are and the best way to apply treatment. Once they gather all the information, you will most likely need to go in multiple times to be re-aligned. Multiple times are normally needed as your body will take time to get back to its normal state, due to everyday wear and tear. Besides curing your pains, chiropractic treatment will improve your posture, improve your flexibility in your joints, and can even improve your overall balance. Finding an experienced Chiropractor in Portland is very important if you are interested in getting proper treatment. An experienced chiropractor knows the importance of using the proper force during a re-alignment. Experienced chiropractors also know that sometimes the problem requires more than just chiropractic care and will refer you to a professional in the field you...

Added Benefits of Massage

Added Benefits of Massage

When going to get a massage, the main thing on your mind is usually that you want to relax and get some relief for your tired muscles. While you may receive that relief, there are many more benefits you may not know about. Getting massages regularly can improve your overall health in many different ways. Although not a replacement for any needed chiropractic care, massage can improve your posture over time. In fact, many chiropractors have begun hiring massage therapists to work on patients before they do an adjustment. This helps the patient’s muscles to loosen up, making it easier to adjust them. Massages help to improve the circulation of blood throughout your body. When your blood circulation is better, your body’s natural healing ability is increased. This means you may not be sick for as long, or sore muscles may recover quicker. Your joints will also benefit from your massage, becoming more flexible, which will reduce your likelihood for future injuries. If you have any breathing or respiratory problems, massage can help with that as well. Some of the muscles in your upper body can restrict breathing when they become tense. Relaxing those muscles helps your body breathe more naturally. Look for an experienced Portland Massage Therapist to aid you in promoting your body’s health. When you find someone experienced in massage therapy, you can get greater benefits out of your sessions. They will listen to your problems and apply the best techniques to alleviate your...

What is Reflexology?

What is Reflexology?

There are times when you are being treated for something medically where you need some extra help to aid in your recovery. Since the medical aspect might already be taken care of, many people turn to alternative medicine to compliment their healing. Alternative healing is the name for methods of healing the body without medication such as massage, acupuncture, and chiropractic care. A lesser known alternative medicine that has been growing in popularity lately is known as reflexology or “zone” therapy.   Reflexology starts by dividing different parts of your body into zones. For example your left foot has zones which connect to organs on your left side. When pressure is applied to these zones it then promotes healing in the corresponding organs. This is done to free blockages in energy fields that prevent our bodies from healing properly. Some ailments that people have sought out reflexology for help with are cancer, asthma, anxiety, and headaches. Reflexology should not be viewed as a cure for any these ailments. A concern of medical professionals is that patients will seek cures in reflexology without seeking medical attention until it is too late. Reflexology should be used as an aid in the improvement of your health after medical attention has been sought. If you are interested in Portland Reflexology be sure to find an experienced professional. A professional can help the process by figuring out the best way to accomplish what you wish to be done in the session. They can also suggest other alternative medicines to aid in your...
